About Lincoln

The county ‘capital’, home to one of the most attractive Gothic cathedrals in the world, two universities (Bishop Grosseteste and University of Lincoln), a Norman castle (now housing one of the few remaining copies of Magna Carta) and birthplace of the tank, Lincoln is a small, vibrant city set within a predominantly rural hinterland.

The exceptionally popular “Uphill” area of the city adjoins the historic quarter surrounding the Cathedral, Castle and ‘The Bail’ (Bailgate). This area of the city also abounds with restaurants.

The city centre contains the main retail areas: the High Street and, further to the south, the St. Marks shopping centre. This part of the city also contains Brayford Pool and University of Lincoln.

West End is primarily residential and, due to its proximity to University of Lincoln, has a high student population as well as West Common on its outskirts.

The Monks Road area lays to the east of the city centre, also has a relatively high student population and contains the Arboretum (a hillside park) particularly popular for walking during the summer months.

Sincil Bank is an area of primarily terraced housing in the south-eastern corner of the city.

The southern part of the city includes Bracebridge (residential and semi-commercial) and Brant Road (mainly residential) with traditionally good bus links to the city centre.

The two major, modern housing developments are Glebe Park in the north-eastern sector and Doddington Park in the south-west, also with good transport links to the city centre.

Tritton Road is a major access ‘artery’ to and from North Hykeham and also includes retail parks and supermarkets along its length.
